CHAPTER 1

THE MOVE

Monroe and Sophie Anderson were getting ready for their big move to Refugio. Refugio is a small historic town in south Texas by the Gulf Coast. Sophie began packing up everything in their old house in north Texas. They were both very excited about the move. They put their house up for sale, and it sold the very first day! They had just purchased a new house in Refugio, and they also bought the house next door as a rent house. Sophie's sister and her husband were going to be moving into the rent house in a few months. Monroe had just retired a few months earlier in Dallas, Texas, after working hard for almost forty years as a land surveyor. It had always been his dream to move back to Refugio. Monroe had grown up there, and he had lots of family and friends living in Refugio. Years ago, his mother, Marie Anderson, had been the Mayor of Refugio for two terms. They visited Refugio when they would take their vacations. Monroe and Sophie both loved the ocean, and always enjoyed their visits to the Gulf Coast. There was so much to see and do living by the Gulf Coast. Their new and exciting adventure was about to begin.

Monroe and Sophie moved into their new house in Refugio. It was an old, blood red, two-story house. Sophie loved her bright red house and thought it was so beautiful. They had a huge palm tree in their front yard and a baby palm tree next to it. There was an orange tree, a lemon tree, a lime tree, several peach trees, a fig tree, and a pecan tree in their backyard. Sophie's orange and lemon trees were loaded with fruit. Their backyard was filled with beautiful tropical shrubs, plants and flowers too. There were several stunning red rose bushes. Sophie absolutely loved her new house. She wanted to bring her backyard to life. She added a cement birdbath, a hummingbird feeder, a bird feeder, mosaic solar garden balls, and solar lanterns. Sophie wanted to plant a lot of banana trees in her backyard. She was given a beautiful red poinsettia for Christmas, and she wanted to plant it in her yard too. She was thrilled that she could actually plant the poinsettia in her yard because of the tropical environment they were living in now.

Sophie and Monroe were both very busy cleaning and painting their new houses. Both houses were very old; they had been built in 1960. They were also remodeling the rent house.

Monroe and Sophie took a drive to Rockport and ate seafood with their family at a restaurant overlooking the ocean that had large glass windows all the way around it! They watched all of the ships at sea and different birds while they were eating. They had a wonderful afternoon. They really were living in paradise. Or so they thought, until one day when everything literally came crashing down all around them.

CHAPTER 2

BLACK MAGIC

They noticed when they moved into their house that there were a lot of stray black cats and kittens roaming the neighborhood. Everywhere you looked, there was a black cat! Sophie thought black cats were gorgeous, and she decided to keep one of the black kittens with green eyes that had shown up every day on her back porch. She named her kitten Black Magic. She thought black cats were very mystical too.

CHAPTER 3

THE NEW HOUSE

Sophie and Monroe noticed strange things started happening from the moment they moved into their new house. Sophie had an eerie feeling about the attic right from the start. When she opened the attic door, it creaked just like a haunted house. She climbed up into the attic just to take a peek at what was up there. She was shocked to see that the entire attic was full of things that the previous owners had left behind! You could tell that they had moved out in a hurry. They also left the entire yard and shed full of their belongings! Sophie shut the attic and decided she would go through it later when she had more time. There was a huge space where the attic door did not shut all the way. She didn't like that, and it gave her the creeps. The bathroom was right by the attic door, and she felt as if someone was watching her every time she passed by the attic. Monroe put a piece of trim over that area. Monroe's son, Phillip, put a lock on the attic door at Sophie's request. Sophie didn't like attics, and they scared her anyway.

Monroe and Sophie's house was next to the old railroad tracks. They had to get used to the loud sounds of the train and the train whistle. The trains ran through the night too. If they felt their bed shaking at night it wasn't a ghost; it was a train. Their house was also across the street from an old cemetery. Sophie's sister thought that was pretty creepy.

Monroe explained to Sophie about the loud siren that sounded off twice a day: once at noon and then 6:00 p.m. The siren would also sound off three times whenever there was a bad car accident or a fire. Refugio had a volunteer fire department. When the volunteer firemen heard the siren sound off three times they responded. Monroe and Sophie's neighbor was a volunteer fireman. Every time the siren would sound off three times, Monroe and Sophie would see him jump into his truck and speed off.

There was also a very old Catholic church near Monroe and Sophie's house. They could hear the sound of the church bells ringing all the time. Sophie loved to hear the old church bells ring. Sophie thought it was such a beautiful little town.

CHAPTER 4

THE FIRST NIGHT

The first night that Sophie and Monroe were in their new house, there was an air freshener that would automatically spray every thirty minutes then stop. It was located in the bathroom on the back of the toilet. The air freshener had mysteriously disappeared. Sophie asked everyone that was at her house helping them move in if they moved it for some reason. They didn't know anything about it and didn't know what she was talking about. Sophie thought that was very strange. Late that night about 3:00 a.m., Sophie went into the bathroom. She heard the sprayer go off. She knew that it was in the bathroom somewhere. She started searching for it and found it behind the shower curtain sitting on the corner of the bathtub. It was spraying the shower curtain from inside the shower! She thought it was very weird, and it could not be explained.

CHAPTER 5

THE HAUNTED MANSION

Sophie had three lovely birds. She had a cockatiel, a parakeet and a canary. Sophie noticed that her birds were sensing something in the house. Her birds had started screaming and flying all around their cages on several occasions as if something had startled them. She would always have to go in the room and try to calm them down. Each time that she went into the room, she felt something eerie and would always walk through a cold spot. She couldn't explain all the cold spots either.

There were several beautiful historic mansions very close to Monroe and Sophie's house. Several people had told her that one of the mansions was haunted. She could see the haunted mansion from her house. Sophie wondered if perhaps her house was haunted too. One day, Sophie took a walk to the haunted mansion. She brought her camera and took several photographs of the mansion. When she got home, she downloaded the photographs on her computer. She started carefully looking through all the photographs. In one of the photographs, she captured what looked just like a man's face in the upstairs window. She enlarged the photograph, and sure enough, you could see the image of a man looking out the window! That was pretty eerie because the mansion was vacant! Sophie noticed a "For Sale" sign on the property, and that the haunted mansion was currently for sale.

Monroe tried to contact the previous owners of the house. He was totally shocked to find out that they had changed their telephone number!

Monroe piled everything that the previous owners had left in the backyard in his truck and took it to the city dump. He had to make several trips to the dump. They left doghouses, a swing set, a large children's castle, a glass table and much more. Sophie gave some of the items to friends and family too.

After Monroe finished cleaning up the backyard, he started going through everything that was left in the shed. There was a sewing machine, vacuum cleaner, coffee table, outdoor patio umbrella and many more items. He piled all of it into the back of his truck and took it to the city dump too. Monroe made twelve trips to the city dump within a few weeks!

CHAPTER 6

HISTORY OF THE HOUSE

Sophie was a writer, so she began researching the history of the house. Sophie started asking around town if her friends knew of anyone who had died who lived in her house. She knew this house had a story to tell, and she wanted to know the story. They told her that someone did in fact die that had lived in that house. They told her that about thirty years ago a woman that lived in her house died a gruesome death in a severe car accident along with three other women. Suddenly, the car caught on fire and burst into flames. All four women were trapped in the car! People witnessed the accident and could hear them screaming for help. They weren't able to save them in time. They were all burned alive! It was terrible, and the people that witnessed it were all horrified.

Sophie continued to ask other friends if they knew of anything that might explain the things that were happening in her house. One friend told her that the house was built on an Indian burial ground. She told Sophie that her house was haunted too. She said things moved around in her house all the time. She lived across the street from Phillip's house. Phillip told Sophie that he believed his house was also haunted. His house was very old and had been built in 1942. He said one time there were loud knocks at his front door, and there was no one there. Several other strange things had happened there too. He said his son's fire truck siren started sounding off one night in the living room by itself. There was a large button on the end table. The button sounded off all by itself and said, "That was easy." No one had pushed the button. Everyone thought all the things that were happening were very freaky. One evening, Monroe and Phillip both saw the spirit of a little boy in the hall at Phillip's house! Phillip's son was in bed sleeping, and the child that they saw had on totally different clothes than his son was wearing. When it happened, Monroe and Phillip both looked at each other and couldn't believe what they had just witnessed. They didn't want to believe it was a ghost, but there was no explanation for what they had seen. Word got out about all the strange things happening at Phillip's house. Many people would not be left alone in his house after that happened. They believed it was haunted too.

CHAPTER 7

BLACK MAGIC ATTACKS

A few months later, Sophie's sister and her husband moved into the rent house next door. The very first day that her sister moved in, Black Magic attacked and bit her sister on the leg! Blood started dripping down her sister's leg. Sophie thought that Black Magic was just young and playful. He had very sharp pointed teeth. They both brushed it off and didn't think anything else about it.

Black Magic grew into a beautiful black cat with silky hair. Black Magic would jump up on the patio table on the back porch and watch Sophie's every move while she was inside her house. She noticed Black Magic had a very loud meow, and it was almost eerie. Every time she turned around, Black Magic would mysteriously appear in her house! She didn't know how he kept getting in her house. She was in bed sleeping one night. Suddenly, she heard Black Magic's eerie meow in her room! She looked over the side of her bed, and there he was sitting there looking at her! She took him back outside. The next night, Monroe and Sophie were in the living room, and Sophie saw something black cross the room out of the corner of her eye. It was Black Magic in the house again! Monroe asked how Black Magic kept getting into the house. Sophie told him she had no idea. Sophie woke up at 4:00 a.m. one morning to the sound of Black Magic's loud and long eerie cry outside her window. He continued crying, and the sound was very spooky.

CHAPTER 8

VANISHED WITHOUT A TRACE

Sophie continued to ask around town about the previous owners of her house. She then found out that about fifty years ago, a woman that lived in her house vanished without a trace. What is even worse is that she was nine months pregnant! She was still missing, and the mystery was never solved. Sophie wanted to find out even more about the house after she heard that unsettling news.
