I was pulling an extra shift at the diner the day planet earth—and my sex life—was catapulted into a new era. I was pouring coffee when a roll of thunder shot across the sky, rumbling loudly enough to send shockwaves through the pot, my body, and to rattle cups and silverware. The sky darkened through the windows much too rapidly to contribute to natural phenomenon. A few people pressed up against the glass, peering out.

Then the screaming began.

“What is that?” I murmured.

The coffee pot nearly slid from my hand when I saw the beams of light outside, a silvery blue glow that made the world eerie. I kept my grip on the pot, returned it to the warmer, and wiped sweaty palms on my apron. Other servers were huddled in the back with the cooks, and the manager was simultaneously shouting into his cell phone while telling patrons to stay calm.

Ashana mai,” came a deep, seductive voice, whispering with a fluid tone that stirred butterflies in my stomach. “A tok a skorami.”

The words flowed over me like silk, bringing goosebumps. I looked around, not seeing the owner of that sensual voice. Nor did it appear that anyone else heard. Some were hiding under tables, others pressed against the windows, watching. Waiting.
